Did you know NY has a luxurious terminal for animals?

Air travel these days is hard enough for humans, with long delays, misplaced baggage, and decreasing facilities. Yet, what is it with animals? They have to travel too, after all, often under seats or in an uncomfortable and disturbing cargo hold.

John F. Kennedy of New York will shortly display an animal-only terminal at JFK. It will be the first-ever terminal designed exclusively for animals

About John F. Kennedy International Airport

It is one of the world’s busiest airports, not only for people but also for animals. More than 70,000 animals travel through JFK Airport in New York City each year. The airport is constructing a new facility on the site of a now-demolished former cargo terminal devoted solely to the care of traveling animals. It can accommodate all dogs, cats, horses, penguins, rare sloths, and several other additional species.

According to the AP, the $48 million, 178,000 square-foot terminal, appropriately named the ARK terminal, would act as both a housing and quarantine facility. Animals arriving in JFK are usually kept at the airport for a brief period, often up to a few days, to ensure they are not infected with infectious diseases. It is the first-ever terminal designed exclusively for animals.

What the builder of Ark has to say?

Builder Racebook Capital honors the ARK as the world’s only private animal terminal and USDA-approved, full-service, 24-hour airport quarantine facility for horses, cats, birds, and livestock imports and exports.

Features involved

Here is a list of the features which the ARK terminal will have, billed as the first-ever terminal designed exclusively for animals:

Climate operated stalls equipped with showers for horses and cows

A 20,000-square-foot dog “resort” (run by Paradise 4 Paws), with more than $100-a-night suites with a flat-screen TV, Splash pools and spa facilities, including messaging therapy and “pawdicures”

A room devoted to give “mating privacy” to the penguins

Holding pens for the sheep, goats, and pigs.

Trees are reserved for cats to climb.

Cows, horses, and other animals also have specially built areas of their own with private stall and showers.

An animal clinic opens 24 hours a day.

In the suites, there are even webcams where owners can maintain some contact with their pets.

Probably ARK’s most impressive feature would be an incredible dog “resort,” writes Capps: a 20,000 square foot dog pampering station complete with bone-shaped baths, pet pedicures, and even doggy massages. Paradise 4 Paws, a manufacturer of “home hotels,” which already boasts locations in Denver and Chicago, will run the dog spa.

By charging pet owners, the ARK plans to make money, just like a hotel would. Dog owners must spend $100 a night to board their dogs at the dog resort. Other prices remain unconfirmed.

Winding up

The life of an animal at ARK may make many humans jealous, but its developer says that it’s all about performance. Given the increasing demand for transporting animals using aircraft, the project director notes in a release, it is time for “a more humane and efficient model for this vital segment of the air travel industry, and it is the first-ever terminal designed exclusively for animals.

Sounds pretty new, right? Think of the traveling dog who is relaxing in front of a flat-screen TV while enjoying a pawdicure every time you’re stuck in a hectic, overcrowded airport.
